Chocolate Layer Cake

A Chocolate Layer Cake is the ultimate indulgence for chocoholics—a moist, tender chocolate sponge stacked high with silky, fudgy ganache or buttercream between each tier. Every bite delivers that perfect balance of deep cocoa richness and sweet creaminess, often heightened by a glossy chocolate glaze on top. The layers can be infused with espresso for a coffee-kissed depth or swirled with ribbons of salted caramel for a sweet-meets-savory surprise.

Beyond the classic, you can sneak in fresh raspberries or cherry compote between layers for bursts of fruit brightness, or fold in toasted nuts—like pecans or hazelnuts—for a satisfying crunch. Finish it off with delicate chocolate curls, a dusting of cocoa powder, or even edible gold leaf for a luxe touch.

Whether you slice it thin for afternoon tea or serve generous wedges at a birthday bash, this cake keeps perfectly when wrapped and refrigerated, so you can enjoy leftovers guilt-free (if there even are any!). Pair a slice with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or a sprinkle of sea salt to really elevate those chocolate notes.

In short, a well-made Chocolate Layer Cake isn’t just dessert—it’s a centerpiece, a conversation starter, and a hug on a plate. 🍫🎂✨

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1.0 cup granulated sugar

  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1.0 tsp baking powder

  • 0.5 tsp baking soda

  • 0.5 tsp salt

  • 2.0 large eggs

  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil

  • 2.0 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1.0 cup boiling water

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes.
  • Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool for about 10 minutes. Then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
